Along with using the primary remedy for treating bad breath in the form of good oral hygiene, you should also visit your doctor.  According to the American Dental Association, the dentist should be seen at least once every six months.  During these visits, the dentist would be able to look for any gum disease, tooth decay or other problem that might cause bad breath.  Other things a dentist looks for is oral cancer, signs of diabetes and even a vitamin deficiency.

In addition to the dentist or hygienist checking the mouth thoroughly, this would give you the opportunity to have your teeth professionally cleaned.  If you had any built up plaque or any trapped particles, these would be removed.  The six-month checkup also allows the dentist to get a better understanding of how you feel overall.  Today, many dentists will quickly look at the head and neck as well, specifically checking for swollen lymph nodes.
